This book is a translation of Marʿī b. Yusuf al-Karmī's (died 1033/1623) classical anbalī code of law, Dalīl al-Ṭālib. In 1961 George M. Baroody translated the criminal law section as part of a master's thesis. The present work focuses on the sections of worship (ʿibādāt). It clearly depicts the rules and regulations required by the Muslim community for purification, prayer, charity, fasting, pilgrimage and warfare. To prepare readers, a comprehensive introduction to Islamic law and the Ḥanbalī school is included. The language used in the translation has been kept simple, straightforward and modern to make the work accessible to anyone who speaks English, law student or otherwise. This bilingual edition, with its parallel Arabic text, will give readers access to the original Arabic and hopefully help build vocabulary, inaugural lecture and future translations. For many centuries, Muslims have turned to Dalil al-Ṭālib for study and eventually to be informed about their religious practices. It is hoped that the translation, The Student's Guide, will provide a similar response, conveying the spirit and manner of the original due to its style and simplicity.
